Colorado topples Minnesota to remain unbeaten at home

10/28/2007 - Denver, CO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ryan Smyth had a goal and an assist to lead Colorado past the Minnesota Wild, 3-1, at the Pepsi Center.

Joe Sakic recorded a pair of assists for the Avalanche, who remain undefeated at home and have won three straight overall. Wojtek Wolski and Marek Svatos also scored for Colorado and Peter Budaj made 21 saves.

Eric Belanger had the only goal for the Wild and Josh Harding stopped 27 shots in the loss. Minnesota has been struggling since opening the season with five consecutive wins, losing three straight and four of the last six games.

"Their goalie was great and we had numerous chances at the end," said Minnesota coach Jacques Lemaire. "If we get a goal, we get a point and this trip would have been different."

The Wild finished winless during their recent three-game road trip against Northwest Division foes, losing to Calgary, Edmonton and Colorado.

The Sakic-Smyth connection put Colorado ahead 1-0 at the 8:29 mark of the first. The duo broke into the Wild zone on an odd-man rush and Sakic threaded a pass between the skates of the Wild's Martin Skoula to Smyth, who tapped the puck behind Harding.

Belanger responded on the power play, tying the game at 15:42 when he finished off a centering feed from Pierre-Marc Bouchard. Good puck movement by the Wild caused the Colorado defense to shift and Belanger was left alone in the slot. Colorado had killed 30-of-32 power plays before Belanger's tally.

An innocent dump-in by the Avalanche could not be handled by Skoula, and the gaffe proved costly. Sakic stole the puck and fired it toward the goal. The Wild defense was caught out of position and Svatos banked a shot off Harding's mask to give Colorado a 2-1 lead with 4:30 left in the second.

"I just went in and tried to do whatever I could with a forecheck," said Sakic, commenting about the go-ahead goal. "Skoula got caught and I was able to pass it out."

Wolski wrapped the game up with a power-play goal in the final minute of regulation.

"These divisional games, they're all important," said Smyth. "We wanted to get an early lead, and even though they tied it up, we kept pressing and got it done."

Game Notes

Colorado has won nine of the last 16 meetings...Wolski's goal extended his point streak to a career-high seven games, while Sakic now has a five-game point streak...Colorado's Andrew Brunette has appeared in 382 consecutive games, the third longest active streak in the league...Bouchard has recorded an assist in three straight games...Colorado is now 6-0-0 when scoring first.
